Malaysia Student Visa & EMGS guide
International students studying in Malaysia need a Student Pass, applied for through EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) — usually handled by your university after you accept an offer.
The process, step by step
- Accept your offer letter from an MQA-recognised Malaysian institution.
- Your university submits your Student Pass application to EMGS on your behalf.
- Complete the EMGS medical screening and provide your documents.
- EMGS issues a Visa Approval Letter (VAL) — typically in a few weeks.
- Enter Malaysia with your VAL, complete a post-arrival medical, and your Student Pass is endorsed in your passport.
Documents you’ll typically need
- A passport valid for at least 12 months.
- Certified academic transcripts and certificates.
- Passport-size photographs to EMGS specification.
- Offer letter from your university.
- Health declaration / medical screening results.
Costs & timelines
EMGS and visa-related fees vary; budget several hundred ringgit for processing, medical and the Student Pass sticker. Start early — allow 4–8 weeks before your intake.
